JUGNU: Micro-financing to Empower Women in slums of India
Sunday April 21, 2019
OUR IMPACT WILL BE EXPANDING TO INDIA THIS YEAR!
Divinart will be partnering with an organization in India called, SAFA to empower women living in slums of Hyderabad, India. JUGNU by SAFA is an micro-financing project which provides refundable loans without interest, to set up micro enterprises or promote the growth of an existing business.
The idea of this project arose from the need to provide livelihood opportunities for women who are undergoing training with SAFA. According to SAFA, the main challenges women face are cultural and mobility constraints, house work and family responsibilities, due to which they prefer working at home rather than travelling for work. As a solution to this, SAFA came up with the idea of JUGNU to promote micro-business for women which can be established at home. The selected women go through training and assistance to build their own micro-business using their passion and skills.
The goal of this project is to allow women to be financially independent as many women living in vulnerable regions often stay at home and depend on their partners or family members for financial support and needs.
Divinart donated Rs. 100,000 (approx. $1,900 CAD) to support women living in difficult circumstances to start their own micro-enterprise. The women will go through a 6 month training period and then another 6 months to establish their business.
15-20 micro-enterprises will be set up over the period of a year in slums of Bhola nagar, Syed nagar, Vattepally, Bibi ka chashma, Hafeezpet, Ahmed nagar, and Turkapally.
With the donation given, each woman will receive a micro-finance to launch their business which they then repay this amount after successfully establishing their micro-enterprise. The donation given by Divinart will then become a revolving fund which will be used in the following years to help and empower more women with their skills and passion.
A 6 month update will be shared on the impact and women who are benefiting from the donation.
